My name is Lilan Starker and I am a speech and language pathologist.

What have I been up to?
I graduated in 2020 from the University of Cape Town.

For my compulsory community service year I was placed at Botshabelo District Hospital. I was the only speech and language pathologist at the hospital and had to start the Speech department from scratch. I serviced the entire Botshabelo, Thaba Nchu, and Ladybrand areas. My position often required me to work in a multidisciplinary team which has cultivated a love for teamwork as it creates the best possible outcome for patients.

After my community service year, I proceeded to work in Hermanus and Caledon for Joanné Schoeman Speech Therapy practice. There I learned a great deal from Joanné which gave me the confidence to start Starker Speech Therapy.

My practice is currently based at Jan van Riebeeck Primary, Huppelland Pre-Primary, and private rooms at 12 Upper Orange, Oranjezicht.

My passion

I love working as a Speech and Language Pathologist. I passionately believe that every child deserves a champion – an unwavering advocate in their corner. My career is anchored in the power of connection and the firm belief in the potential of every learner. With extensive experience in a school-based setting, I specialise in creating nurturing environments where learners feel safe to explore, learn, and grow. I especially enjoy interacting with patients and find fulfillment in seeing them respond to treatment. I am always willing to go the extra mile in helping my patients achieve their goals. I'm patient and cautious in my decision-making, but I take initiative when required.

My approach

With extensive experience in a school-based setting, I specialize in creating nurturing environments where learners feel safe to explore, learn, and grow. My approach involves not only direct therapy with learners but also empowering parents and educators with strategies to support each child's communication and educational journey. I am committed to ensuring that every child I work with becomes the best they can be, embracing the unique challenges and triumphs of their individual learning paths.
